Lenten Sacrifice, Part two of the Duology
Clea sits in her home, the memories of Wren, Roram, and Kess still pulsing in her mind. Memories she knows to be true yet counteract her society. Pain and sorrow may dominate her, but she must continue. For her daughter, Eleonora, if nothing else. Until a knock on her door arrives, and a stranger from the past comes to ignite dull embers.
Wren awakes to the terror that his nightmare isn’t over. He remains where he was doomed from the start. What role is there still to play? Survival is all that is at stake now.
Pip aimlessly wanders the streets of Calah, his life hanging in the balance. Sentenced to die in the wilderness, he has survived, and many see it as further proof at the demise of their own people. Turmoil brews in the land, everyone possessing their own opinion on how to interpret the signs. Regardless of allegiance, they all agree that death is coming.
The Sequel to Lenten Rose, currently in progress. This work is part two of the larger story surrounding the many memorable themes and characters from Lenten Rose. While the story will conclude with this entry, voices from others within still yearn to be heard.
Embedhead (Working Title)
Without chaos, we cannot see order. Without either, we cannot see time. And without time, what is existence?
Life is fragile. It needs what it has created if it wants to be sustained. That need is man.
Keeper of the Keige: Eider Hollinder (Short Story from the world of Lenten Rose)
How sad, to play a part in our own history yet deny a possibility of their persistence in the world.
The Watchers: Lakota Demouré (Short Story from the world of Lenten Rose)
Lakota picked up the quill and laid the point to paper, feeling the precision of what felt like a blade scraping gently across foam. Where did the page come from, and the ink?
Lakota let the quill drop again, this time watching it roll off the book and onto the ground next to a yellow blossom. A curved line lay on the page before him.
“Lad, you think too much. Why torture yourself?”
Lakota loved to learn. But above all, he loved to understand.
Beyond the Story: What Will Never Be Seen, Until Now
Many, many words go into creating a world and cohesive story. Not all of them end up in that final story. Yet I love my thoughts and ideas all the same, even if they were clearly worse or too esoteric when they were written. They give glimpses into my intent and where I wanted the story of Lenten Rose to go. So, take a look at the ideas or story beats that didn’t make it, and let me know if you think any should have (for my own madness)
If the mouth of heaven should open, I would not enter. Not for lack of desire, but of worth.
